2012 came to a gripping end as India witnessed pent-up rage over sexual abuse and violation of the female gender manifest itself as protests and riots across state lines. Youngsters were finally taking to the streets to fight for a safer India… A nation seething with anger has become the backdrop of her current battle!
From a fashion publicist to a social entrepreneur to an activist, Radhika Ganesh has a portfolio that is as diverse and vibrant as her personality. An alumna of the prestigious London College of Fashion, UK with a dual degree in Fashion Design and Marketing, she has always been a driven achiever.
At a very young age she decided her calling was to be a part of endeavours that make a difference. Growing up in a family that broke all social clichés, further nurtured here desire to be a part of platforms that aid positive transformation within her society. She grew up to believe that awareness and good governance that supports and encourages action were key to a society’s holistic development.
This belief and a keen understanding of deficits in the Indian political system encouraged her to be more than a mere spectator. Any chance there was to act; she did not give it a miss. She saw her access to good education and global exposure as her strength and advantage to enable the change she envisioned. At the age of 16, Radhika took her first step into political activism. She vigorously involved herself in campaigning for a new age political party that was floated by a group of youngsters. While her friends from school spent their summer vacations holidaying, she spent hers going door-to-door canvassing people to understand and exercise their rights, to chose to make a difference.
She is a strong advocate of participatory democracy. She believes people, as civil society have great responsibility in building clean, balanced societies. Their part is as important as that of a government’s. She has taken part in several movements including, propagation of he Right to Information Act, fight against sexual discrimination, right to vote, right to education, farmers welfare, anti-graft etc., lending her voice alongside leaders and activist from various communities.
Her deep commitment to bring about change and passion for equal and just society has often landed her in great company. Her interactions with iconic revolutionaries like Medha Patkar, Kiran Bedi, Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, Bunker Roy, Uma Tuli, Dr. Abdul Kalam, and many others has endlessly inspired her to build a resilient spirit.
She has been a part of several forums and platforms that address social issues at all levels. Amongst several other, she has had the privilege of being one of the contributing world speakers at the renowned “Think Forum” conducted by the Colombia University, USA, and she was one among the three international speakers who had the opportunity of addressing the congressional gathering about the policy deficits and lack of community growth aiding decision making within foreign policies.
The recent outbreak over sexual violence perpetuated upon women and children in this country, motivated Radhika’s most recent fight. She joined people from various groups in organizing protests, discussions and rallies in Chennai. But the issue burnt in her mind at a much deeper leave. Her direct interaction in the past with victims of such violence pushed her to see this as an opportunity for an overhaul. With the determination to begin 2013 with a positive change, she persevered to turn this anger into an awakening.
